About Haven’s Harvest

Haven’s Harvest is a fast-growing nonprofit that rescues surplus food and redistributes it to communities experiencing food insecurity. Since 2019, we’ve recovered over 10 million pounds of food, reducing waste and feeding thousands of New Haven neighbors.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: build community and reduce food waste, one food rescue at a time. Our vision is a future where no good food goes to waste—especially while people go hungry.

Why Us?

As a Food Recovery & Community Impact Intern, you’ll play a key role in shaping the future of food access and sustainability in New Haven. This is not a sit-on-the-sidelines internship—you will be central to projects that blend data, storytelling, advocacy, and hands-on impact.

Your work will:

  • Expand access to healthy food for families, schools, and community groups.

  • Reduce food waste and greenhouse gas emissions, advancing climate goals.

  • Build stronger neighborhood networks and highlight grassroots voices.

  • Demonstrate how local, community-driven solutions can create real systems change.

Internship Projects & Deliverables

You’ll lead a summer project that combines research, community engagement, and program development.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Mapping & Analysis: Create a neighborhood food access map by analyzing recovery and distribution data to identify gaps and opportunities.

  • Community Storytelling: Interview partners, youth, and food recipients to document impact stories and amplify local voices.

  • Campaign Development: Support the pilot of our Zero Food Waste by 2030 campaign through outreach, education materials, and events.

  • Hands-On Logistics: Join daily food rescues to experience firsthand how surplus food is recovered and redistributed.

Final Deliverables:

  1. A data report and community food access map.

  2. A portfolio of community stories showcasing social and environmental impact.

  3. Recommendations for expanding Haven’s Harvest’s role in advancing New Haven’s food security and climate goals.

What You’ll Gain

  • Professional Development: Experience in nonprofit project management, sustainability, and community partnerships.

  • Leadership & Advocacy Skills: Opportunities to lead initiatives, run community events, and craft outreach campaigns.

  • Practical Impact: Leave behind tangible work—maps, stories, and strategies—that will guide New Haven’s future food recovery efforts.

  • Mentorship & Support: A welcoming team committed to collaboration, creativity, and equity.

  • Connections: Engage with local leaders, grassroots organizations, and Yale alumni already shaping the field.

Who Should Apply?

This fellowship is especially meaningful for students interested in:

  • Tackling climate change and food insecurity.

  • Building leadership experience in a supportive, community-driven nonprofit.

  • Gaining both analytical skills (data mapping, reporting) and people skills (storytelling, partnerships).

  • Being part of a team that values creativity, initiative, and fresh ideas.
